Love of Life

Without love, we would have no Òðr or passion in life, no will to live, and no fire in our minds that fuel our Runes or Magic. Many throw away love, for all sorts of reasons: because they feel unworthy of it, because it's not glamorous or it doesn't come in the package they expect, because everyone around them makes fun of people for cherishing it, because we've been told it doesn't put food on the table, because...because...

I have had people tell me that my loving nature is weakness and I will always be hurt. That may be the case...i may always suffer adversity...i may not have a choice in that, but I have the choice to choose to love. If I am to suffer the whims of fate, i would only want to do so being the most loving that I can. I need my goddesses in those darkest of times.

I once had a dream from an ancestor who told me that the reason that the Christians won was because they got Pagans to sacrifice freedom for a false love. My ancestor said that in the old days, they knew that the great treasure of the Gods was the Goddesses. The Goddesses WERE the wealth and They Carried the love of family which was the wealth of the tribe. Hardship can make a man cold and when a people have suffered they can become swindled by thieves. The thing is, love never thrives in slavery, which is what the mindset of what Christianity is. It is a mindset of blind service and worship to a god without consideration of oneself. That infertile ground will always choke out love. Love eventually dies when it's shackled by commandments. For a thousand years, Pagans slowly betrayed their Personal Liberation for such slavery and sought a god that taught them false love. True love exists in Freedom. True love exists in the cracks of circumstance seeping through like light through a cave. In the Voluspa, the greatest war was fought over Oaths broken because of love. The gods know that love is the greatest wealth. Yet we threw it away everyday because it doesn't give us money or prestige or power.
We sacrifice the love and kindness of those who care most about us and in doing so, we show the goddesses that we no longer believe in them or want them in our lives.

We throw away love because we've been taught that it means nothing and yet we become angry because the world does not love us or treat us with kindness and consideration. Meanwhile the world grows cold in the heart, and the minds of men forsake the goddess at thier own doom.

Doom always comes when someone forsakes the calling of thier heart for the ideals of others.

When I was younger, I thought i had to be an angry environmentalist and abuse people to help them see my agenda. I couldn't just love them and let them work thier shit out. I had to meddle. I had to push. I had to be an Asshole...until my Ancestors showed me that I had become the very nightmare I was fighting.

So I sat for years and listened to them...and listened to people around me. That was when Odin the Shaman found me and I cracked inside out...realizing that I have been fighting myself the whole time and betraying the Goddesses every step of the way.

And you know what? My mothers forgave me...because they knew I had a thousand years of oorlog piled upon my heart and it had been so long since my family had felt the full love of the Earth and her Goddesses.

So I opened myself to thier teaching and step by step, i widened that door to thier love.

The consequence has been being misunderstood and hurt by every person I meet...but I now get to choose freedom over slavery. I will love people and give them the freedom to love me back or not. I will no longer grasp...but cherish even the most fleeting of moments.

For life is but a Svipdag...a fleeting day. Love edures forever.

Fire and Ice

Once upon a time, spirits came from the stars in beams of light...they hit this planet infusing consciouness into matter, making life. Cycle after cycle this life grows and seeks to understand itself. A few life forms rise and seek to know more about where life came from...they see the stars and feel they are home....they seek to wake those around them to the souls within thier material form.

Many get confused in this journey of knowing. Each of us have a piece of the puzzle and if we can remember that, in a way, all of us are right...if we remember to open our minds to take in everything...we just might grow and heal the divides that happen.

When souls get divided from the rest, they slow down and succumb to apathy...the great Isa that buried Buri. It has a spirit...it is a force in this universe. Isa and Dagaz dance in the cosmos. In the end it's not about light or dark or good and evil. It's about fire and ice. Too much fire and we burn and merge with the infinate. Too much ice and we slow and become inert.

Fire is the energy of Odr...the energy of spirit. Ice is the calming of it. We can freeze and still live in our bodies for a while when our spirit is frozen, but we don't usually live too well (it is seen as a deadness in the eyes). It's easy to fall asleep in the soul, especially when we feel isolated and not loved...especially when no one believes in us or loves us. A wise soul knows how to find the hot springs of spirit in order to get the soul moving again.

We need it just right as humans. Just enough fire. Just enough ice. Dancing in the gap between the precarious balance of the two. If we are out of balance, we either burn or we fade.

If you're too cold, find some heat. If you're too warm, find some ice. It's your journey.

Don't die.

Isa

Isa

Before life began all matter wove
With the lattice work of time. Then,
Moved and melted by Muspell fires -
ISA became Hoarfrost, mother of Ymir.
With Audumbla as Nursemaid,
(Since HAGALAZ makes for a bitter mother)
Ymir grew, while emergent Gods
Seeded the ground with green Laukan.
And yet, Isa remained: Sword of Norðri
Might of matter, and the Main of Time.
For all Runes are birthed from ISA
All Runes come from the single groove
Made by a Rune Carver's knife.
She is the Hatch, the slice, the sword mark
Upon the tender bark of the tree.
She is the force, the foundation, the essence
Of what moves in this Midgard world.
She is the Hamr’s skin, the warrior’s blade
Time’s unyielding glacier of decay.
She can engulf and trap,
Yet is a bridge to skate upon,
While weeping, she waits before Sunna’s fire.
She is the balm to the fevered and unrelenting mind.
She is the bane to the lazy and insolent.
She is the peace-bringer and entropy of all fires -
That burn in the hearts and mind of men.
And she can trap even the greatest of Gods
Who pause to slumber in her quiet Nifl fields.

Birch Torch

Birch Torch

The torch holds the Kenaz that burns the Birch.
For Berkano is the wood that feeds the flames.
It’s dry bark is used for ember’s birth
And the written enlightened word.
Both lights capturing the illumination of the mind.

The estate is built by the Birch.
Well sought are it’s gentle groves.
A signal of water-born earth -
Harvest comes wherever Berkano thrives.

The greening wood becomes red-gold flame,
The seedless harvest is turned to burning,
And yet, what is cut does not stop growing,
Where roots do hold fast.

The estate needs Birch to build and adorn the hall
With fuel for fires of the Hearth.
For without Birch, there would be no warmth, no light,
No illuminating heat.
No shared minds, nor warmed heart.

The Birch is the greenest of trees
The seedless mother,
The nursemaid of fire.
The green home illuminating
Fehu’s Byre.

The Shape of Pain

The Shape of Pain

Pain has a shape:
An action and a reaction.
A shadow dance of Self.
If felt for long enough
We mold into the opposite shape
Of those causing us pain.

And when the pain is removed
We flow, like a tide pool
Into a footprint, becoming
The very pain that was caused to us.

If others come across us at this time
We lash out to those loving and kind
With the same pain that was dealt to us.

And they take the shape of our last pain.
Thus pain passes on its shape
Generations weeping
From broken heart to broken heart.

Only when we pause
While flowing in and out
Of the shape of our pain
Only when we refrain from shaping others
Do we stop the rebirth of tragedy.

It takes Patience and Awareness
And the willingness to forgive oneself -
To disbelieve the shadows that haunt us.

It takes openness and hope
And creativity to see how we
Created half of the shape of our pain
And that we are responsible for it.

And we just might find
That if we pause after pain
If we, instead of reacting -
Merely listen, accept, and heal
The Self.
If we take conscious responsibility
Of the shape of our Self.

Then the shape of pain fades
Becoming but a distant memory
Lost to our kin and family.

Sif of the Golden Hair

It was a nice Thanksgiving this year. I went to a yoga workshop in the morning and spent the whole afternoon studying Runes and Qi Gong healing techniques. At some point as I was heading to bed, I chuckled to myself. A year ago, the thought of spending holdays alone would have been a horror. Now, I'm grateful for my space. Everyone in my life is there as a blessing. I've cleared all the things from me that no longer work. I've choosen what was most important to me. I am very grateful for a new special someone that makes my every day happy. I am grateful for the small group of friends I do have. I am grateful for the small yoga studio where I'm learning Kundalini yoga. I am grateful to my Ancestors and Gods who have supported me every step of the way. I am grateful to all the kind folk I meet online like yourselves that continually amaze and inspire me.

Life may bring unforseen events, but how we percieve them determines how they affect us. Opening up to the Runes is never easy because they demand that you be true to yourself and being true to yourself is never popular. The majority of people in this world would rather give away thier true nature for a small bit of ease and comfort. Freedom always comes with the danger of the unknown.

After all, life is about choices. Eventually our consciousness is molded by our choices. We become what we choose. So in the end, choice really is what matters.

Own your choices. Live deliberately. The world may end up hating you, but you will grow to love yourself...and in the end, that's what fulfills us. That's what gets us through the darkness of this world. Self Love.

One goddess that has taught me much in this journey of Self Love is the Harvest Goddess Sif, beloved wife of Tor. In my heart I call her  "she who lost and gained her beauty back" and her story has been an inspiration to me over the years. Her journey reminds all of us women that no matter if we get lost and forget our worth, that we can eventually heal and regain that strength again. The beautiful thing is that when we go through those trials, our hearts are ever tender to the lost and forgotten women of this world... Much like the tender heart of Sif.

The Love of the Goddess

Oorlog

"You know what fate and oorlog is? It’s years of your decisions that have piled up around you as it avalanches all over your face. We aren’t Christians and we don’t get saved at the last minute as Heathens. If you spend your whole life dicking people over, eventually your community will catch wind of it and you will die a lonely “dicked-over” mess. If you spend your life abandoning your true friends and your gods for selfish reasons, you will die disconnected from your very ancestors and your soul will wander aimlessly on the Nifl wastelands. If you spend your life in fear and cowardice, then your end will be small and no one will remember you and If they do, it will be about how glad they are that you are fucking gone from this planet so they don't have to deal with your whiny ass anymore. Oorlog is built day by day, choice by choice. We don’t change overnight, we have to fucking earn our legacy. No one gets special brownie points for existing in this world. That’s a pipe dream invented by the Church to keep men small, childish, and weak. It’s a cleaver philosophy because weak men can be manipulated and controlled more easily. Except for Heathen folk: Folk who earn their legacy every waking breath that they have and strive every day against the foolishness of this world. Those kinds of folk cannot be manipulated or controlled because they know what they have earned and are willing to fight to protect it. That is why petulant cowards attack them. The cowardly and weak-willed will always hate those who earn their place in this world."

Freyjasdag Meditation

A Freyjasdag meditation:

I wrote this in response to a post about drama in the magical community. As a Seidrwoman, I seek to always steep my mind in myth and the Gods. When I look out at the events of today, I see old patterns and stories reviving themselves. That is why myth is so powerful...it represents the cycles of the Zeitgeist of the Germanic people. Pay attention to the cycles and you can navigate a lot of the unseen forces in life.

"In the Heathen tradition, Vanaheim always wars with Jotunheim. Vanaheim being the more empathic Maternal based energies, and Jotunheim, the more Patriarchal and masculine energies. Freyja, Freyr-Ingvi, Gerd, and Odin balanced these energies. We can look to thier stories as guideposts in our own journey.

What you are seeing in the witch community is happening in the Heathen communities, too. Magic has a way of bubbling one's unresolved issues to the surface. It's all a part of what's necessary, though. Like labor pangs, we have to wade through our shadows in order to even get to the veil that separates us from our infinite selves. When a whole community is mired in shadow work, it's easy to get caught in the crossfire of chaotic emotions."

I don't see two Americas: the so called liberal and conservative America. I see the energies of Jotunheim clashing with the energies of Vanaheim, just as they always have done. The Aesir ruled the 9 realms because they learned how to balance the 9 realms within them. They learned how to channel and use the energies of NIFLHEIM, MUSPELHEIM, JOTUNHEIM, VANAHEIM, SVARTLHEIM, LJOSALFHEIM, HELHEIM, and MIDGARD. Those energies were cultivated and utilized in each God.
Balance like this isn't easy and in order for us mortals to do that, we must wade in and face the shadows of each world....the murkstaves of each. But it's easy to get trapped by these shadows, especially if one is not aware of them. One Goddess that has guided me though such darkness is Freyja Vanadis. Her power and magic lends towards healing and bringing light into the darkness.

On this Freyjasdag, I wish you all the healing light she brings to illuminate the darkness. May you find the hope you need in order to grow and evolve as a person. May you feel the love and power of your Ancestors and Gods once more.

Hail Freyja!
Hail to the Disir of our tribes!
Hail to those who wield and house the magic of the Gods in thier hearts!

Granny Magic - Back to Basics

Granny Magic
(Runes and Wisdom)

Magic is amazing, especially when it works. There is nothing like the thrill of seeing your spells work or to find out that your insight is running clear. It doesn’t always work, though, and in those moments it’s easy to blame others or ourselves for what goes awry. I like to think of magic like fishing. I’m going to bait my hook and I’m going to stand in the best spots and not matter what kind of fish I catch, I’m going to be grateful I get to eat at night. The more I fish, the better I get and the more I learn about fish and river, the better I get….and the more I do magic and talk to others who do it, the better I get at it. The more I study and cast spells and the more I learn, the better my spells get. It’s very easy to just pick up an old grimoire and do an incantation from it, but those spells were made specifically by that witch, who paid a price for those spells. We don’t know what those spells cost to that witch so if we do them, we might end up paying that cost without understanding what we are giving away. Each of us has a unique way of connecting with the seas of souls around us, this the onus lays upon us to figure ourselves and our magic out. It is our responsibility to make our own spells.
This is why I have always loved the Socratic method. In the Ancient Greek schools, a teacher would come and sit among the students and the students would ask questions. The teacher would only answer the questions and if the student wanted better answers, they had to learn to ask better questions. In my experience, the spiritual world operates much like this. We can walk blithely into realms and think we know exactly what is happening, but if we do not question, if we do not investigate, we are walking blind in a realm that doesn’t always care for our body and sanity. But what is a person, this is important to know what we are if we are going to start manipulating forces in and around us.
18.
Önd þau né áttu, óð þau né höfðu,
lá né læti né litu góða;
önd gaf Óðinn, óð gaf Hænir,
lá gaf Lóðurr ok litu góða.

18.
They had neither breath nor wit nor life hue
nor manner nor good looks. Odin gave them
the breath of life, Hoenir gave them wod,
Lothur gave them life and good looks.
-          Voluspa

In the Voluspa, the Volva talks about the three parts of our being imparted by the Gods: Önd, óð, and Lá. For any of us to be empowered and connected to the Gods, we need to make sure all these are in good working order. The Önd or Soul is our eternal and magical self. This is the eternal part of us and it is what fuels our consciousness and magic. The body is filled with lá (or in Norse lore Hamr). This is our personal and physical power in this world. People with powerful Hamr’s are not only charismatic, they are also strong and can endure a lot. They can be resilient to magic and tragedy. Some train their Hamr to travel outside of their body and they can shape it into animals or other beings and effect people’s dreams or minds. This is Hamingja, or the force of our Hamr in the world. There is a very beautiful story about the crest of Iceland based on the Hamingja of four powerful wizards who protected the island with their Hamingjas. Then the force that transfers energy from the Önd to the Lá is called óð. We see this in Odinn’s name which means “master of óð”. This word comes from the ProtoGermanic word Wodanaz and it is what I believe all Runes are made of. It has been my experience, that the very act of Rune Galdr actually grows our óð in our bodies. This óð force can be used to heal, hurt, or create magical spells. I have found that óð can be depleted by spellwork, but it can grow back with Runegaldr and meditation.  In my visions, I’ve seen Runes as 24 plants inside me and they grow like tall trees, their roots are invisible and the tops are made of different colored winds that have sound. I can capture this wind and shape it, where each Rune tree gives off a type of energy. The mix of energies determine the outcome of the spell. I often feel like I’m cooking or composing with Rune magic, mixing energies in the cauldron of my mind, so that I can brew the perfect elixir for the spell. We all see the magical world in many different ways depending on our own life experiences. I know music and cooking, so I see Runes in that way. I can imagine an engineer or a biochemist would see them other ways. But with each story and perspective we learn from others, our knowledge and scope of Rune usage grows.
So we have these three parts and if any of them fall out of balance, there are often outside problems. What I try to do is always pay attention to how each of my soul part is faring. I have been doing a type of Sensory meditation for about 5 years now, so I have added a scanning of my soul parts every morning and night. It’s a good practice to always check in and see where we are at. If my óð is running low, I know I need to take a week off spellwork and recharge with Rune Galdr. If my Lá energy is running low, I know I can replace that through treating my body well or using óð to fuel it. If I’m losing connection with my Önd, I know that empathy, Utiseta, and rites of ecstasy will help me connect with my infinite self. In all of these ways, I dance with my magical self to try and find out how to grow and evolve. Each of us are on our own individual journey and it is that journey that we support one another on. As a magical worker, I have learned to not desire that others take my path….but they others take their own path. Wholeness is only found in seeking the self.
In the last 6 months, I have been embarking on some advanced magic techniques that not only taught me a lot, but taught me the importance to always get back to basics. Grandma wisdom can be some of your best tools when doing magic. Below are some simple rules of magic that helped me and I thought I would share. Think of them as Granny magic. Rules to live better by:

1.       Use it or lose it – if you don’t use your magical energy, you will naturally either waste it on others or it will dissipate. In my opinion, if you find yourself full of spirit (óð), you would be best to store it items or making spellwork to aid you and your community.
2.       You are what you eat – we all need certain energies around us to thrive. We all need at least some kindness and understanding. If we are surrounded by harsh energies, we will become them. In any kind of human interaction, we share our spirit (óð) with one another. The way that spirit is, determines our interation. If you give kindness and understanding to others and they give you hatred, then, If you don’t want to be a hateful person, you will need to expend energy to transform that hatred, or you reflect their energy right back at them, or you dump that hatred on someone else. That energy has to go somewhere. Nothing is ever destroyed, only transformed into usable or unusable tools. This principle goes towards spirits, too. There are certain spirits that are given rage and fear as food and those spirits become them. It’s good to know what your spirits are eating.
3.       Everything in moderation – all spellwork should be done in moderation. The body must be honored, for if we lose our will to live or heal people so much, we get sick from it, we don’t do anyone any good. We must find a balance in our work and communicate to others that we are honoring our bodies and minds. This is especially challenging when doing Runes, because and excess of óð leads to mania and strong delusions of grandeur. This over-confidence can be useful at times, but overusing it and we can burn ourselves out. Moderation and balance is always a very good principle to go back to.
4.       Health is better than wealth – When I meet most people who are interested in magic, everyone seems to either want money, sex, or revenge. The thing is, those all come by very easily, but the most important thing is strength: strength of body, mind, heart, constitution. If you have strength and are healthy in all ways, anything can be eventually acquired with a little bit of work and patience. Health and Wholeness, I have found, is the key towards growing one’s magic and might in this world.
5.       Life is what you make it – I wish I could shake most people I meet who see their lives as such tragedies. They do not see the Gods or the luck that surrounds them. Being able to change our perspective about the events we are going through prevents us from stabbing our own hearts with our own fears and doubts. I have been told I’m an eternal optimist. This is because I choose to be one. If I was not an optimist, I would have to wade through six inches of my own mental shit in order to cast magic. I prefer to not wade through shit, so if shit comes my way, I dump it and move on. If I don’t like the version of my life that I’m living, I work to change it. I change my perspective…and it’s not easy, but it helps in magic so much. The less self doubt we have, the more true our spells will hit their mark.
6.       Out of sight, out of mind – this goes for your enemies as well as your friends. If we are focused on those who have wronged us, we lose sight of the people who actually matter to us in life. Meanwhile, if we are only focused on those we like, we might overlook our enemy sneaking up behind us. #3 helps here. Try to find balance.
7.       Know yourself. Play to your strengths – Each of us have different strengths and different weaknesses based on our own individual personalities. A wise witch plays always seeks to grow and evolve but when it counts, plays to their strengths. A good teacher will encourage you to find those.
8.       Too many cooks spoil the broth – it’s important that when working with others, to know what people can contribute to. If everyone is honest about their weaknesses and strengths, then everyone can make a good choice as to the spells they do collectively. Too many competing energies can disrupt the spell (and this goes with internal spirits or energies). The more, everyone is on the same page, the stronger the spell is.
9.       Home is where the heart is – we each have our own sacred space setup…either in nature or in ourselves. It’s always important to have a place to recharge and heal when doing magic work. If my home life is not stable, I know that my spell work won’t be either. Home is where the heart is and it’s also the well of where our magic is brewed.
So I wish you all, good magic this coming Winter. May your hearths be hale and healthy, May your bodies be strong and whole. May you all grow in wisdom and kindness.

Lady Hel

Lady Hel
The oldest Idisi
On the Eastern Gate of Nifel sat
Guarded by Garm
And blood-sated cock.

She waits for way-rider
At Rain-driven’s Gate
In the hooded hour
Of Raven’s spell song.

Her wit, a stern snow-wind
Born in gore-blended might.
Her heart born in Swan’s land
Which feasts on corpse drink.

When Way-Finder comes
With word-wit and wyrd,
Her red wounds spit out blood
In shared horn betwixt the two.

Spoke they of Kings and Gods alike
And the fate of Embla’s brood.
How dawn follows dusk
And God-bright falls.

How the wasting night comes
When men forsake might
When Gods forsake amber bright
In war-torn plight.

Gore-blended is her way
Knitted by the sater of ravens.
She too weeps with tears
That glistens with dawn’s light.

Theory of All of The Above

(Runic spell to reverse psychic vampirism)

Have you ever opened a text message or have seen a social media post and felt drained after reading it or seeing it? How you somehow felt irritated or cranky about it? When that happens, most likely it’s due to an energetic boundary violation.

Have you ever met someone and just interacting with them both irritates and drains you? When that happens, most likely it’s due to an energetic boundary violation.

Many people call these psychic vampires. The side effect of psychic vampires is that they keep you weak and distracted and you get stuck in your cycles because you are so busy that you can’t see your head from your ass to do anything about it. The good news is this is also a way to reverse the problem. They exist from three basic runes which can be altered to alleviate our problem.

As a Witch, I don’t like to just slap a label on something and call it a day. There are underlying reasons for everything and since I love Seidr and magic, I try to dissect and observe how these things happen.

Recently, a Shaman told me something that set bells off in my head. He said that “fear eats love and all emotions that keep the heart whole and healthy. It is a mindless killer.”

When he said this, I saw the NAUTHIZ Rune in my head and behind it was HAGALAZ and then a wonky URUZ. The URUZ got me curious because I often use that Rune to heal and redirect energies around myself and others and it appeared to me upside down. How could Uruz be connected to energetic vampires?? This led me on a fantastic hunt not only inside myself but meeting some new experiences in life.

The body (La), the spirit (Odr), and the Soul (Ond) must exist in balance for the whole person to be healthy and complete. The best wards are often made through a person finding good balance between the three parts of themselves. If any one of those parts are depleted too much, it will pull on the others to balance (like a low pressure weather system flowing into a high pressure weather system). Our minds are often the playground of this balance between the soul and the body. The thoughts and emotions inside our heads working much like weather systems as energies move and rebalance. Get energy stolen from the body and it pulls from the Soul causing a bunch of turbulence in the mind. For the most part, people don’t know how to steal the soul or mind energy of others….mostly they just steal Hamr energy. Then the mind works to move the energy of the soul through the body so that it can replenish.

Some adept in Runes can steal soul energy and they are not only some of the most dangerous psychic vampires you could ever meet, but they can also be some of the hardest to spot. ALWAYS LOOK AT THE NEGATIVE SPACE, YOUNG SEIDRWORKER! The vampire will be surrounded by drama, sickness, and death. If you have a healthy community and all of a sudden it falls prey to drama and people start dying, you possibly have a OND vampire in your midst. They will be the healthiest and happiest even amidst all this chaos. This is because they feed off the love of others because they cannot generate love inside themselves anymore. They have learned to outsource their fear which is eating at the little bit of life reserves they still have so other people can experience it. That fear shifts love and happiness in the hearts of others to the vampire. They can only survive if they have people’s love to feed on. What often happens when an energetic vampire gets into a community is that they cause so much drama and gossip that it creates a hunger storm of people feeding off off people and a frenzy of boundary violations. This also causes addictive behaviour because the love is drained from people's hearts.

The practice I have learned to help in these situations is learning to befriend fear (FREYJA) and keep strong boundaries around my love (THORR!). I started to think of my fears as parts of me that have been weakened, so I began to befriend them, and be compassionate with them. LAGUZ is a good Rune for this work. LAGUZ counteracts the NAUTHIZ that draws out people’s love from their hearts. It stops that Need-fire before it even gets a chance to spark. Then WUNJO…adding in laughter and making light of the situation and laughing at the ridiculousness of how these things happen counteracts HAGALAZ. When you can laugh at the funny aspects of misfortune, then misfortune loses its hold on us. The drama and pain around the vampire act as a whirlwind of HAGALAZ to suck away our happiness. Then lastly, the horns of Uruz must be turned back to their proper place. A part of nature is survival of the fittest where life feeds on life and the strongest overcome the weakest. Yet, there is another side of nature and that is ADAPTABILITY (this was taught to me by a wise WOLF). Nature can evolve and adapt to environmental stresses and so can we. URUZ can be modified to be a power of adaptation instead of blind survival. This can be done with our actions. When we channel URUZ, we can be mindful that all the actions we do that day is about learning to adapt to situations instead of blindly reacting. The energy of our body and mind, will alter the energy in our soul and the Rune will turn and change. REMEMBER: WHAT YOU DO, SAY, AND THINK EFFECTS YOUR INNER RUNES.

The changing of Runic energies is related to the energy of DAGAZ. The Day Rune is the Rune of cycles and change. The Sun is also a prime reason for our genetic evolution. Solar rays penetrate all life forms and mutate DNA. The source of the sun and the cycles it produces is our best ally in transforming Runes in us and around us.

I always suggest a deep study of Dagaz when people want to change their patterns. Throwing your wishes (WUNJO) into DAGAZ will reveal how to get your wishes granted. Throwing your needs (NAUTHIZ) will show you why you got into this mess in the first place. Dagr is the great illuminator God and I am amazed at how few Heathens seek his guidance.

A good way to seek Dagr is during his times of becoming and ending (Dawn and Dusk). Seek him and ask for his aid in illuminating the cycles in your life. Then leave your heart and mind open for everything and anyone around you to teach you the lessons. RUNES TEACH US THROUGH THE THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS OF OTHERS

One of my old Rune teachers had this great nugget of wisdom that he shared, to which I adapted and added on to. I call it “ALL OF THE ABOVE”

THEORY OF ALL OF THE ABOVE

Every one of us has unique minds and bodies, thus our experiences and perceptions about the world (and astral world) around us will vastly differ. A wise Rune Mage knows that the RUNA, the great RUNES, are made up of countless little runes…meaning PEOPLE. We each have mini versions of the great RUNA in us. That means we ALL have pieces of the puzzle (Sneaky Odin loves to play tricks!!) That means that every one of our Runic experiences are all valid and true. They all add to the collective RUNA.

RUNA is the collective energies of every Runic experience that has ever happened or is happening or will ever happen in the future.

(sound familiar, Heathens?) *wink wink wink*

Now piecing all this wild data together is the real difficult part. Sometimes it can just be a nightmare to do that…but hey, Odin is also a God of Terror as well as Wisdom. Sometimes we gotta face that Terror in order to get the Wisdom. Shit just rolls that way sometimes.

So we experience Runes and our friends and enemies experience Runes and all those are true. It’s like, if you’re taking a test and every question is:

What is the meaning of existence?

A.      My meaning
B.      The meaning of my friends and mentors
C.      The meaning of my enemies
D.      ALL OF THE ABOVE

And every answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE. It’s a bit exhausting sometimes figuring it all out and we are, by no means, obligated to do so. Yet some of us with some free brain time and a penchant to go mad every once in a while can choose to do so.

This theory of ALL OF THE ABOVE is all born out of using empathy in Seidr. Using Empathy to understand and empathize with everyone allows for us to learn how to integrate and thus grow the RUNA inside us. This is how we get out of sticky situations and addictive patterns, as well. Well, it’s the first step. You see, I’ve met people who know this, but they don’t have the drive to do anything about it. If you want lasting change, you gotta strap your DAGAZ to your MANNAZ and muscle up the courage to actually make sacrifices and change in order for this to fully grow in a person.

Knowing wisdom is only the precursor to actually acting on it.

But, hey, we all got to start somewhere. So best of luck to you Runanauts! May you break those cycles, free yourself from hungry vamps, see more than your ever have, and do more that you could have ever imagined!

Life is out there waiting for you.

Go get ‘em tigers!

Emotional Seidr – The path of the Frigga and Freyja

Hugr  - thought (Huginn)

Munr – emotion/memory (Munnin)

This is how I see emotions, as gigantic St. Bernard’s carrying a case full of thoughts. I see them this way, because I love St. Bernard’s. They make me happy and imagining them in this way helps me to interact with them on a spiritual and mental level. Technically, emotions are just energy that is both brought into and ejected from our bodies. We generate emotions as a part of being living organisms. They are not thoughts, but they can be vehicles of thoughts. In fact, thoughts would not be able to travel anywhere unless they are carried by emotions. That’s why, when someone is dying or weak, it is hard to understand them. Their body is weak, so they have given up on emotional exchange. They can no longer send their thoughts to others, thus two way empathy becomes very hard. It takes physical energy for the body to generate emotions. The more we deplete our energy, the less force our emotions have. Lack of emotional exchange is also why communication breaks down between people. Lack of emotional exchange is why confusion happens because you would not be able to fully understand someone unless they sent their thoughts on a wave of emotions to you. Without emotions, thoughts fall flat in the astral plane. They move very little. Emotions are the force that moves things in the spiritual plane. Emotions are the way we explore and connect with the world around us. Ever be around a child and notice how they can switch from emotion to emotion at the drop of a hat? They are testing their spiritual powers. They are trying out how to play and manipulate with their emotions.

Sadly, emotional expression has been repressed throughout most of the world. Many emotional people are shamed for expressing their emotions which gives them deep wounds in their Munr. Those young children are taught not to express their rage or sorrow, their happiness or their ecstatic joy. When each time this happens, the child develops wounds in their Munr, which stunts their growth. They might choose perhaps one emotion to use at all times; maybe joy for women (because women are seen desirable if they are happy); maybe anger for men because they are seen as powerful if they are angry. They repress all other emotions and only focus on one. This effects how they transfer thoughts to people and also effects the types of relationships they get involved in throughout their lives.

People who suppress anger often betray those around them. People who suppress joy often shame those around them. People who suppress sadness often mock those around them. People who suppress love often harass others. There are also countless nuances here because each of our emotions can be blended with one another. Sorting through all these emotions can take a lot of work, but I find it rewarding work and I usually spend most of my day not only talking and interacting with my emotions, but with the emotions of others.

I get emotion puppies from people every day. Most of the time, people don’t realize they are trying to eject their emotions onto others. Many people don’t want to feel their emotions, so they either bottle them up and hide them in their body or they eject them all over people around them. What emotions we express and give to others, we lose. We can also eject emotions onto others to share deep magical information.

My old Seidr teacher operated without emotional exchange in that she would never take in or share any too many emotions with others. She would bottle her emotions up and keep them confined and any time anyone around her would exhibit emotions, she would throw them back in the other’s face with a nice dose of shame. She was into the harsh ordeal and she did not have patience for anyone who wanted to feel anything that she did not agree with. I needed this training for a while for I have very chaotic emotions and she did teach me some control over mine, but the manner in which she did it left me weak and depleted. Shame is never a long lasting teaching tool, especially for an empathetic person.

I had to leave training with her because I felt there was another way to do this. I spent a year reaching out to Freyja for guidance on this issue and she eventually called me towards this work of learning how to energetically exchange emotions. She sent me teacher after teacher who showed me that Love is the great emotion that all thoughts and Runes sail on. She gave me the gift of WunjoLaguz and I see now why they call her Mardoll, the daughter of the sea and shining waters. Her love comes to me in waves most days. When I am broken from my work, beaten down and burdened with the emotions that others lay at my feet, I offer them to Mardoll, the great Goddess of Emotions who sweeps my Oorlog clean with her tides of love. Her love literally washes me each day and I am renewed so when I feel the hatred, shame, anger, and pain of others, I bring them to the shores of Love where Freyja resides in Folkvangr and I let her carry those burdens away.

I also sought Frigga, the great maternal mother who gives WunjoBerkano from the fertile fens of Fensalir. Every time I needed to find the will to keep going and have a positive attitude after being hurt and betrayed time and time again, I would go to Frigga. She would show me her wide fertile heart and cry with me. She would hold me as a mother Bear and show me how to grow my own strength and resolve back. She taught me how to regrow my hope after it had been ripped from me and after I had naively given it away. Between  Frigga and Freyja, I learned that no matter if he whole world did not love or understand me, they did. They would always be there as my mothers to guide and help me in times of need. They fed me in ways I have never been fed before.

My Shamanic background has taught me that all creatures survive based upon emotional and energetic exchange. None of us can live too long without them, especially the emotional exchanges of love and compassion. I have seen people wither and die from lack of love. I have experienced it myself. Love feeds us just as much as food nourishes our body and we throw true unconditional love away often at our own spiritual peril.

Many of us have been sold that love and emotions should only be exchanged if the other person is perfect and blemish free in their Oorlog. Yet, the shaman knows all of us are broken. I remember once crying to my Shaman brother about being afraid of getting into another relationship after breaking up with my ex-husband. I told him I was afraid because now I can see the brokenness in people more than I ever could. I was afraid to love someone broken because they might betray or hurt me. I thought my new partner should be perfect and whole and I would never have to worry about their wounds, but was upset because no person exists like that.

My brother laughed and said, “All of us are broken in places. You want to be with someone who’s willing to work with you through that brokenness.”

What I didn’t realize is this applies to all of our relationships. None of us are whole or complete. None of us are perfect and wound-free. The people we want in our lives are people who see our wounds and our struggles and are willing to work with us and walk alongside us regardless of those wounds. People who see us and are undeterred by our weaknesses. Those are true friends and companions; people who see us and are not afraid of our shadows.

Some of us have St. Bernards that still piss on the carpet and tear up our shoes. Some of us have St. Bernard’s that jump in the cars of strangers or run out into the road. Some of us have St. Bernard’s that bite people and cause fights in the park with other dogs. Some of us have St. Bernard’s that are afraid of leaving the house or who have been crippled from being in a cage for so long. A good and true friends sees the state of our puppies and sticks around. Like Frigg and Freyja, they might help out in training them or give us permission to let them out of the cages we’ve been locking them in.

I believe Seidr is essential towards us understanding who we are and how our emotions work. I also believe this work is essential towards healing people in both the mind (Odr), body (La) and Spirit (Ond). I think this work is essential for our communities and those of us who are born with extra empathetic feelers have ways in which we can train and grow without repressing or binding ourselves.

Freyja has always taught me that it is possible for an empathetic person to become empowered. She teaches me every day, how to be fierce and brave and still feel everything. I am always stretched and I always grow, and I’ve come to trust that even when I am stretched to the point of where I fear my mind and heart may break and kill me, she sends kind folk my way to remind me of the love of the Gods. Frigga teaches me that I can grow from anything and that there is no pain too big that I cannot weather. She teaches me about renewal and strength and how to not give up on people even if they hurt me. She teaches me of the power of emotional fortitude.

I am faithful to both my goddesses Freyja and Frigga because time and time again, they have been faithful to me. They have shown me a better world where people can find wholeness and healing, even amidst the chaos of life.

Lothur gave them life and good looks.

Huginn ok Muninn fljúga hverjan dag
Jörmungrund yfir;

Huginn and Muninn
fly over the earth each day.
I dread that Huginn may not come back,
though I fear more for Muninn.
